Selina Clausen is our Rehearsal Assistant. She performs several duties for the choir including: sign in and sign out, organization of the music library, preparing materials for choristers and parents, photocopying, set-up and clean-up.
Selina is a student in Grade 8 and enjoys singing in our Progetto as well as in the Calgary Girls Choir – Brava. Her other passions include: Art, reading, Agility with her dog Akyra, jewelry making and other crafts. One day she hopes to have a degree in Ecology and help animals.
Founder and Artistic Director
Karen Yackel is our Founder and
Artistic Director. She has been a music teacher for the past 23
years. She began her career teaching
grade 6 and 7 Band and Elementary General music in 4 schools in Cranbrook,
BC. in 1991.
While in Cranbrook Miss Karen also
conducted school choirs as well as volunteered as conductor of an 80 member adult
community choir “Kootenay Chamber Orchestra Choir” as well as a 60 member show
choir “The KC singers”.
Karen also founded and
directed an adult community band called the "Da Capo Band" and she performed in several musical theatre
performances as well as singing in a performance of “Mozart’s Magic
Karen studied at the University
of Calgary majoring in Music Education.
She studied Grade X voice, and Grade IX piano, and has experience
teaching music to children and adults of all ages as well as Orff and Kodaly
She moved back to Calgary in
1999 and continued to teach music in the school system at the Elementary and
Junior High levels. When her second
daughter was born she taught “Music for Young Children” off and on for 10
years. For a brief period she went back
to teaching in the school system teaching music to grades 1-3 at Webber
Academy. As director of the grade 1-3
choir she entered the choir in Kiwanis and Choral Fest winning a gold medal at
both festivals and was asked to bring the choir to provincial competition which
they did and performed amazingly.
Miss Karen is excited to begin a second year with the Airdrie
Children's Choir in the Fall of 2016 as well as her private Music Studio for piano and voice
lessons. Feeling now like she can focus
on her favorite combination of teaching with private, teaching and
Children's Choir - The best of all worlds.

Program Director and Events Coordinator
Lauren Clausen is the choir's Program Director and Events Coordinator. Lauren is a recent Graduate from St. Martin dePorres High School in Airdrie. Her background in music started when she was three when she took part in the Music for Young Children Program in Calgary. She completed her grade one piano with First Class Honors with Distinction. She continued piano up to grade IV Royal Conservatory and traded in her piano fingers for a violin. Lauren has played in several orchestras and this past year played first violin with the Calgary Youth Orchestra. Lauren will be attending the University of Calgary in the Fall with a Major in Psychology and a minor in music.She will be taking the Suzuki program during the summer and begin teaching violin this fall.
Lauren's Duties with the choir will be to assist the Director with duties related to programming, event bookings, parent meetings, concert coordination, corporate donations and fundraising.
Dara Fensky has been playing piano since the age of 10. She began her studies with Jill Kotchen. She also worked with Marian Parrot and Susan Hlasney and completed her intermediate Pedagogy and Grade 10 RCM. Dara is currently completing her Bachelor of Music at the University of Calgary continuing her studies with Charles Foreman. She is also studying with Andover educator Michele Wheatly-Brown learning body mapping techniques.
Dara loves all types of musi, but has a special interest in Classical. She loves vocal music and enjoys accompanying choirs as well as being a soloist.
Currently Dara works with both the Airdrie Children's Choir, The Airdrie Women's Choir and the Calgary Girls Choir.
As well as accompanying, Dara teaches piano in her studio, Piano Melodies, in Crossfield.
